Toolkit

As some critics push for Congress to put a new tax on credit unions, we need your help to share how credit unions make people and communities stronger. It’s important lawmakers understand how a new tax will be a new tax on you—their constituents—and the negative consequences it would have on people, communities, and the nation as a whole.

Should you have any questions about proper usage, please contact social@americascreditunions.org, and we will be happy to assist! Thank you for your help in spreading the word about the #CUDifference!

Campaign ask & goals

The #DontTaxMyCreditUnion campaign aims to encourage advocacy among consumers—credit union members and nonmembers alike—on the credit union difference. Protecting the credit unions that serve you and more than 140 million other Americans will take us all sharing our stories!

1. Educate

Tax policy is complex, but ultimately people are at the core of this issue. Credit unions serve more than 140 million Americans, contribute significantly to our nation’s economy, and create opportunities for people that they might not have access to otherwise. As a credit union member, you’ve experienced the credit union difference yourself but check out the facts behind the tax status to learn more.

2. Share

How has your credit union helped you achieve your financial goals? From lower rates on home and auto loans, to no- and low-fee accounts and financial education programs, credit unions step up in various ways to serve its members like you. Sharing on social—through posts or our video testimonial below—how your credit union has personally helped you raise awareness from a trusted source.

3. Take Action

After you’ve shared your story, we encourage you to send a message directly to lawmakers urging them to say “no” to a new tax on credit unions, because ultimately it’s a new tax on you. You can do so in our “Take Action” section that provides a template message for you to personalize with the impact of your credit union. Your voice matters to your congressperson.

4. Encourage

Protecting the credit union tax status will take all of us coming together to form a united front. Encourage your friends, family, and other credit union members to share their impact stories and take action, too.

Share your story

We want to hear from you! With over 140 million credit union members nationwide, our collective voices are more powerful together. We invite you to record a brief message and share it on your social media platform of choice. Let lawmakers know that a tax on credit unions is a tax on all of us.

Lights

Before filming, make sure you are facing toward the main source of light in the area. Opt for natural light if you can. If you’re wearing glasses, be sure to check if your light source is reflecting off your lenses. The easiest thing to do is to remove your glasses. Not an option? Raise your light source to reduce or eliminate glare.

Camera

Frame yourself in the center of your screen using either your smartphone or laptop. Be sure to include enough space for captions either above or below your head. You’ll want to aim your camera just above eye level to capture the best angle.

Action

Tell us why being a credit union member is important to you. Did a credit union provide the loan to your first car or home? Is it where you’ve saved for a recent vacation? Does the teller at your favorite branch know you by name? There’s no limit to the number of ways credit unions help everyday people meet their financial goals. Here are a few questions that should help you frame your credit union story.

  1. When did you join your credit union?
  2. Why did you choose to be a member of a credit union?
  3. What services do you rely on for your credit union?
  4. How has your credit union made an impact on your financial health?
  5. What would you tell a friend about the benefits of being a credit union member?
  6. How would you be impacted if your credit union had to raise costs of services, or stop offering certain things?
