CUNA said Wednesday that more than 5,000 tweets, 600 Facebook posts and 8,000 messages to lawmakers were generated the day before in its “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” social media push.

“The level of engagement we saw on Don’t Tax Tuesday is a testament to the power of social media and to the dedication of credit union members, who value their credit unions so much that they actually want to stand together and advocate for protecting that value with lawmakers,” CUNA President/CEO Bill Cheney said.

The trade group also said there now has been more than 1 million views on its www.DontTaxMyCreditUnion.org since it was launched in May – including more than 69,000 on Tuesday – and that more than 850,000 messages have been sent to congressmen.

“The heavy participation even crashed the ‘Don’t Tax My Credit Union’ website for a brief period, and the #DontTaxMyCU hashtag became a Twitter trending topic in the Missouri area,” CUNA said in a release Wednesday, also noting separate efforts Tuesday by the leagues in New York and Michigan.

The national effort also has been bilingual and the trade group is touting the Spanish version of the Don’t Tax site, www.NoImpuestosAMiCU.org, that tells members of Congress “No Le Cobren Impuestos a mi Credit Union.”
